Herrington said the program is meant for lighthouse enthusiasts, as all the program applications the society received so far have come from outside the Upper Thumb. “Those people (from Detroit) had such a nice time, they are coming back for the same weekend,” Herrington said.
The Pennsylvania group consisted of experienced travelers, having been assistant keepers at seven other lighthouses, and they even dressed up in period appropriate clothing while at the grounds. The Detroit area group stayed during the Heritage Festival and they volunteered to help set everything up.

It has a living/dining room, a kitchen, one full bathroom, heating, and a washer and dryer in the basement.ĭuring the summer of 2021, two different groups of people stayed at the assistant keepers’ house, one group from the Detroit area in August and the other from Pennsylvania in September. The assistant keeper’s house was originally built in 1905 and includes two bedrooms that can sleep up to four adults total.
